What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that the sites visited by the user send to their browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, etc.), where they are stored before being re-transmitted to the same websites at the next visit to the same user.

During the navigation of a site, the user may also receive cookies from other websites or Web servers on his screen (so-called "third partycookies); the reason for this is that elements may also be present on the website visited such as images, maps, sounds, social buttons (Facebooks "Like", googles "+1", etc.) which offer specific links to web pages of other domains on servers other than the one where the requested page is found. In other words, these are cookies that are set by a website other than the one you are currently visiting.

These are known as technical cookies and are used for the sole purpose of "carrying out the transmission of data over an electronic communications network, or as strictly necessary for the provider of an information service company when explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide this service (see art. 122, paragraph 1, of the Code).

Profiling cookies, on the other hand, are used to create user profiles and are used in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences shown by the user himself whilst surfing the net. They refer to Article. 122 of the Code which states that "the storage of information in the computer equipment of a contractor or user or access to information already stored, is only allowed on condition that the contractor or the user has given consent after being informed using the simplified procedures referred to in Article 13, paragraph 3 "(Art. 122, paragraph 1, of the Code).
